Using Existing Dentures to Bypass Custom Trays and Occlusal Rims
Advances in scanning and printing technology are drastically improving the removable industry. From a correct scan of the patient's current denture(s), Great Impressions can make an exact copy of a current denture or a new and improved denture. The technique is simple and allows all parties involved to bypass the custom tray and occlusal rims!
Below are scanning tips and everything the lab needs.
1. A scan of the current denture(s) out of the mouth.
This step can be tricky but following this guideline will ensure success.t
First: Reline the intaglio with a tissue conditioner ( i.e. GC Coe-Comfort) so that your scanner can image the reflective spots.
Second: Scan the denture(s), intaglio surface first. After the intaglio is scanned, work your way around the borders (ensuring the borders are nicely imaged) and wrap around the teeth. Complete the scan by imaging the linguals of the teeth and about 4 mm of the lingual gingiva.
** Important Tip # 1 ** Many scanners have trouble imaging the palate of upper dentures. We do not need that information so don’t worry about capturing it. Our software will generate it to save you time
** Important Tip # 2 ** When scanning, be sure to keep the scanning wand stationary while rotating the denture or vice versa. Moving both at the same time will confuse the scanner.
2. Scan the Opposing Arch
3. Capture a bite scan with the denture(s) seated in the mouth.
** Important Tip # 3 ** Indicate all changes you’d like to make (i.e. vertical, length, midline, aesthetics, etc..), if any, on the script. Also, send pictures/ notate if needed.
Following these steps and tips will help your practice achieve successful denture deliveries. If you have any
